Last night I noticed the my male dwarf had built a bubble nest in my 200 litre planted tank. I then watched in fascination as the the two dwarfs went through the mating ritual and the female released her eggs which the male diligently gathered up and placed in the nest. This was hampered by my other fish, especially the danios eating the eggs. However I woke this morning to find the nest gone and three dead danios, presumably killed by the male while trying to protect the nest. I have just constructed a make shift breeding net from plastic coat hangers and a pair of tights and want to know if I could do the following. Watch the pair and wait until all eggs are in the nest, submerge the net in the tank and from underneath place the bubble nest in the net. If I can do this, do either of the parents need to be in the net as well or do I just wait until the fry appear from the nest after 2-3 days ans feed fry food. In my tank at the mo I now have zebra danios, Colombian tetra, scissortails, corys, small bristlenose, rams and shrimp. Please help me stop more fish casualties

the male must be there they care for the eggs with their life! so yeh more then likely was the male to kill the danios but the male has to kept in there your best bet is to move the dwarfs to their own tank or move the other fish the dwarfs will constantly breed once they start and will kill others and defend the nest with all their LIFE hope i helped :)

This is great help, thanks. One more question, should I keep the male with nest until the fry come out of the nest then remove him, as I have heard he takes good care of them then starts to eat them. I am thinking that if I remove when the fry are free swimming, I can then feed myself

Yeh when the yolk sac has gone from the fry move him away its a little difficult as the fry may be eaten if not in a seperate tank to their self :)
