howdy fellas!!

You see I have three Upside Down Catfishes in one of my tanks.... and I was wondering if someone could tell me how to breed them. I had been reading books about these Catfishes and all these books say that they are captive-bred and they dig in the substrate to mate, the female is bigger than the male, and both parents protect the eggs.

I had been conditioning them by feeding them:
1)-Frozen Blood worms.
2)- some flies....No insecticides are been used only the fish net.

I would like to get mosquito larvea but they are not available....it would be great if you guys tell me how to get mosquito larveas and how to culture them. THANKS A LOT!!

Synodontis nigriventris, AKA common upside-down catfish? They have been spawned in captivity using hormone injections, but I'm not aware of any naturally-occuring spawning in aquariums. Synodontis do also need some vegetable content in their diet, spirulina flake is good, occaisonally some peas as well.

Yes there had been some breeding reports about these catfishes, mine are colored Black or jet black.

nigriventris are not jet black.
i have a burmese upside down catfish, mystus leucophasis, jet black with silver specs down its sides, this sound similar to yours?
if so, same story, no one has been reported to have bred these in captivity but are bred on farms using hormone injections.
not all that common here, don't know about where you are.
nice fish, mine is getting on for about 8 inch's now! its a male, was going to buy him a female companion but theres no point as it is near impossible to get them to naturally breed in captivity.

Ah yes, beautiful looking fish. Picked on my other fish horribly and had to be rehomed. (I'd taken it off someone who thought it was a syno! Silly me for not seeing pics first...but it was years ago.)
I keep numerous synos, and have had breeding from my Eupterus. Not supposed to happen apparently, but they were the reason I upgraded my tank. Only had one babe survive. Amazing considering their tankmates. I didn't know it was in there until it popped up one day out of the rockwork.
So never say never. It can happen. It's unlikely I grant you but make 'em happy, spoil them rotten and you never know!

theres a report of normal upside down catfish being spawned without hormone injections

Thanks kizno, I always knew that these catfishes can be bred in captivity, but that is not an easy job, I only want to know how to condition them.

I can't recall hearing of anyone breeding there UDC without doing something extra (like the hormone injection mentioned above). Sorry I can't be a better help but good luck
