Upgrading To A Bigger Tank?

I currently have a 20 gallon and I plan on moving up to a 55 gallon. The 20 gal is already cycled and currently houses neons, cories and a betta. The 20 gal has been set up and running for about 4 months now but i feel like i need a bigger tank as i want more fish.
 
What is the most efficient way to change from the old tank to my newer, bigger one without changing water chemistry or shocking fish?

Take media out of filter in the 20gal and put as much as possible into the 55gallon tank.
 
Do not overstock after doing so, Slowly increase stock size over a few weeks.
