I've just bought an Eheim 2324 for my 120l tank to replace a Fluval 3+. How long should I leave the two running in parallel to allow bacteria to develop in the Eheim's filter media? The tank's populated by Harlequins, Corys, Ottos, a Betta and two mystery guests (click here) :)

i did the same thing!!!!!

run them both 4 about 2 weeks

then put some of the media from the internal into the external

it will be fine - mine was!

hope this helps

I have been thinking of doing theis swap myself. I have been running a fluval 4+ in my ft tank and quite honestly have been very disappointed with the quality of the filtering.
Just wondering if this is the same reason for your change.

There's a few reasons I've decided to change:

1. As you say, I'm not convinced the fluval is strong enough for the tank
2. It's messy, whenever I lift the fluval out of the water to clean the media lots of filter gunk always falls into the tank.
3. External filters make the tank look neater, especially if you go for a thermofilter which eliminates the need for a seperate heater

I went for the Eheim 2324 as everyone seems to be unanimous that Eheims are the best brand and I wanted a filter that would also be good for a larger tank if I ever get round to upgrading.
