so my shrimp tank is well underway now, will post a pic in a couple of days. i already have millions of red cherry shrimp and want something a bit different. my lfs have some orange kiss and some rednose but i want something really unusual. i saw some black shrimp online apparently all the rage in japan but havnt had much chance to look into it, so does anyone know if black, blue/black shrimp are actually available or am i going to have to go with some usuals?

Hi Sarah,

Yes there are some wonderful Black and Blue shrimp available.. I cannot see a location in your profile so cannot tell if you are UK based or not but in the UK there are a fair few places to source stock from... Most are pretty pricey, however rather impressive:

Black Tiger Shrimp - Caridina cantonensis sp. "Black Tiger"

Blue Pearl Shrimp - Neocaridina cf. zhangjiajiensis var. blue

im not worried about the price really, ive just never seen anything like that where i am (essex, uk) i want something a bit special as its a shrimp only tank. where would i start to look? of course i'll do some research and i have a way to go with the tank yet. i love both blue and black but would they mix? i actually saw some that were blue and black striped which i think is what i want... bit annoyed that the tank has a black background and black sand... if they really are available i'll have to have a rescape. how pricey are we talking?

heres a ebay shop for the blue pearls ( im hopefully getting some soon) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YOUNG-BLUE-PEARL-SHRIMP-Neocaridina-sp-zhangjiajiensis-BEAUTIFUL-0-5cm-1CM-/280771447193?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Fish&hash=item415f484999#ht_1278wt_1037

£5 for each blue...

and the black will bring out the colour of the blue ones
they wont inter breed

tempted... :) blue crs are what im looking for i think... but see the blue could work with the black scape...

they are the blue cherry red shrimp. same species- just a colour morph . they only entered the hobbie in 2007... fairly hard to find in the UK.

sorry i mean crystal red shrimp, with the stripes, but a blue and black version... but i like those blues, i like the yellows too lol so when the tank is finished i'll see then. those black tigers are a thought for another tank tho :)

The blue pearls noted above will breed with Cherry Shrimp as they are essentially a colour morph. To stop interbreeding, You need to look at some Caridina Shrimp such as Tigers, Crystals etc ...

this is a separate tank, no shrimp in it yet. ive decided on blue but cant decide whether to get the blue red cherrys (cheap and easy) or the blue tigers (expensive and shop says moderately difficult to keep and breed)

i think the blue cherrys are rearer in the uk atm. (iv only found 2 sellers both on ebay) so if you wanted to sell them once they started breeding im sure you would have buyers :good:

i think im going to get the blue cherrys then and maybe later in the year do a tank for black tigers. how risky is getting them thru the post from ebay? will they be ok. i think cherrys are quite hardy arent they?
