My friend at work has tried everywhere in the midlands to solve his problem with no success so I suggested I would try a forum for him as he has no internet access. His problems starts with clusters of clears eggs the size of fish roe appearing in the tank after about 28 days which then hatch into 1000's of worm like creatures white in colour measuring about 2mm in length they then attatched themselves to his oscar. After about a week they hatch into very small flies green in colour. His oscar died a couple of months ago so he emptied the tank and left it for 4 weeks with nothing in then he filled it with bleach and water and left it for 2 days to try and kill anything left behind. He then set his tank back up 4 weeks ago brand new gravel etc but no fish in there and last night these clumps of clear eggs have reappeared again. Does anyone have any idea what it could be.

sounds disturbingdo you have any pictures of the eggs? ihave not heard of anything like this before but im shure that one of the members will have heard of it or will know where to find info about it as many of them keep oscars.

I dont have a clue what it is. But if more eggs were found, then only an adult fly could have laid them. So bleaching would not have any effects. If he has a pond or is near a river / lake, then they could be coming from there.

Sounds like something out a horror film

He has not got any photos, but the worm like creatures also suck blood and flesh from the oscar. Is there anywhere he can take a sample of the water/eggs/worms to be analyzed

Dont think the local petshop would, but definately any maidenhead aquatics. Have a look here if there is a local branch. Or any chain of aquatic centres.

i think i heard some thing about units at the natural history museum in london but i am not shure if it would cost money.i would guess no loacal vet would have knowledge of this sort of parasite. perhaps there would be an email address on one of the sites.
