Hey all ...

I am sorry I just quoted myself but I am feeling particularly lazy after just moving my 3ft cichlid tank into a new 4ft tank.

This was posted under old world as I thought that it was mbuna but got like 4 replies so I am hoping that posting it here could shed more light onto this fish.

Extra Information :

I got around 2 asking the guy who we got it from what he could tell me as it was a suprise gift ...

The fish ("He" for all intents and purposes) was all a pearl colour and only changed dark purple in verticle lines across his body when annoyed or harrassed. He developed egg spots later in his life and the orange colour was due 2 a change in diet. (the guy said he bought red pellets that developed colour in fish and the orange appeared after a few weeks of feeding him that)

He has a very stubby rounded nose, and a lower placed mouth (bottom feeder I am guessing???).

I have seen him try eat off the glass (algae I am assuming)

Any and all information will be much appreciated !!!!

Hey all ...

Really sorry to bother but can someone tell me what this is ... (I know its a fish, )

I came home to find it as a present in my community tank, this guy is ungodly fast.

I would say he is in the region of 10cm+ (4in+)

Thanks for any and all advice.

Richard.

Hey Glenbo1981 ...

I looked up the species u mentioned ... the nose is completely different ... I will try get a better pic 2mro and I will post pix of my new tank setup as well ...

This guys nose is rounded and the mouth sits back a bit under the nose ... if that makes sense ... lol ...

Regards,
Richard.

It sounds like a rock dweller to me, with a mouth shape like that (if I understood you correctly)...not hot on African species though, I am sure someone else will be able to give an ID for it.

I think I may just have found it ... can anyonce confirm or deny ?? ...

Labeotropheus fuelleborni

The colouring is different ... but the shape is almost spot on ...

Or

Labeotropheus trewavasae

He loves 2 chase fish so I am guessing a slightly more aggressive nature like this ... even tho its the same species

Hey kaivalagi,
Could you explain what u meant by rock dweller ... I mean what does mouth shape have 2 do with it ... lol

From my limited understanding quite a few of the rock dwellers from the african lakes have specially shaped mouths with a rasping action to scrape algae off of rocks. Your explaination of the fish lip shape made me think of those specialised mouth parts.

And from the page you just linked to above for the species ID:

" L. fuelleborni is a heavy algae eater in the wild, scraping algae of off rocks. I have even witnessed juveniles trying to scrap algae off the glass in my grow-out tank. I guess that curved upper lip really helps out here."<br class="Apple-interchange-newline">Your fish is a grazer in nature me thinks :)

Edit: As Glendo says you ought to post in the african cichlid section now to get expert info on your fish, just with those egg spots we know it's african :)

So we definately have found my fish ...

thanks for the confirmation and explination 2 u both !! ..

The reason I posted it here even tho i thought it was old world is just cause of the lack of response I had from the old world section ...

Thanks guys

Regards,
Richard

not a hybrid, lfs has one in show tank thats same size, color, but finnage is not as impressive

Hey all ...

Thanks for the compliments on the fish .. He is definately 1 of my favourites ... but has to be re homed soon.

He was originally brought up with an 11 inch oscar and a 8 inch red devil, how he survived I dont know, but it seems I have 2 shut down my 63g tank so I am not sure what to do with him yet.

regards,
Richard
