Fish Herder
As a fish keeper, they're many tools that come standard fish keeping; tanks, nets, water vac; but there are many tools that are not standard, and you will not find at your local fish store. For me, of the most uncommon tools are:
*turkey baster: with this tool I keep a my fry net clean for the baby fish. It also allows me to deliver food to ornaments my Khuli maybe hiding under so they can eat without their dinner being stolen. A turkey baster is also what I use to start the water flow on my water vacuum. It helps me clean smaller tanks of little debris that would just be a waste of time to get a larger tool out for.
*Toothbrush untouched by toothpaste, they could be used to scrub down ornaments that are badly covered with algae, or to help clean out a filter system that need to be cleaned after a few months.
*Colander or flour sifter: I use these to clean rocks that i use to cover the bottom of the tank. using this and the kitchen sink spray i can help get poo and food that has become trapped in the rocks out, thus keeping the tank clean. i however only usually do this when i am moving tanks around or need to do a deep clean.
*measuring spoons: I often use these to measure out dosing when i put medicine in a fish tank. since each size tank require i different dose a measuring spoon is helpful to make sure the correct dose is being given.
*eye droppers: these are probably my least useful item, i do use it when i am dosing smaller tanks or use fish it to feed baby brine shrimp to baby fish.
*Tweezers: i have been using tweezers since my first fish, i use tweezers to give bettas their pellets. i also use them when it comes to distributing frozen foods like blood worms or to crush up peas into a more bite sized form for the fish.
That is just a few tools i use that were never designed for fish keeping, but have proved invaluable.
What tools do you use that you never thought you would use?
