One of my mystery boys, well I think it's a boy. He was swimming around, flaring at me as I neared. I looked in and below his ventral fin was a white spot, the ovipositor! He's got long fins and quite a thick body so my question is.. is he a male or female? :/

Here is a picture. I couldn't zoom in on the ovipositor but it's there. Does he look like a male or female?

Yep definite male. Just to make sure if he is in a bowl to himself see if he/she blows a bubble nest or flares at a mirror.

Females can and do blow bubble nests and they can also flare.

yep...I have a female plakat who thinks her bubblenests are better then the boys...(tom boy) haha and most my girls flare as well...but guys just have extended as I like to call them 'beards' haha but with how long is fins are I would lean more towards it being a male...but you never know!

I think if it were a true ovipositor we'd be able to see it in the pic... Sometimes the vents on males are kinda swollen looking and white, but generally they aren't as large and obvious as true ovipositors. Does it look like one big round bump or kinda like two smaller ones close together? Anyway, he's definitely a male with such long fins
