So I have duckweed in my tank now. I'm a little embarrassed to say that I didn't even realize that's what it was at first. I know where it came from. My own fault, really. I bought a couple of assassin snails from a shop and the tank they were in at the store was lousy with duckweed. I was a little hesitant at first but I decided to go through with the purchase. There was even a couple of pieces in the little plastic cup with a lid they put the snails in. I carefully removed it. I put the assassins in a jar to quarantine them. But clearly not for long enough.
It's more annoying than anything. It's not like it's going to harm the fish (unless I let it overrun the tank) and there's actually some benefit to it. I'm not about to buy a goldfish or dump herbicides into my tank. The only thing to do is an aggressive removal routine every day or two. Maybe I can get rid of it, maybe not. At this point, my expectation is to manage it. And I'll use dedicated equipment for this tank to hopefully avoid spreading. I'll do the water change for this tank on a different day too.

Duckweed can be scary. But, admittedly, it was the first aquatic plant I ever really liked (impossible to kill lol). Maybe it'll grow on you!
I mean if you don't start to like it, it may grow out of the tank and take over you.

I had duckweed in both my tanks and I managed to get rid of it. It was mixed up with the floating plants so this was my approach.

During a water change, I removed all the floating plants into a bucket of old tank water. Then using a net I removed all the duckweed I could find. The ones stuck in the corners and round the cables I removed with a pair of tweezers. Then I refilled the tank.

Two buckets filled with tank temp, dechlorinated tap water. Every floating plant, one by one, was rinsed in the first bucket, then in the second, then placed into a container. It took ages. The plants were then returned to the tank.
I checked the tank every day for signs of the weed, and removed the ones I found with tweezers. It took a couple of weeks till there were no more.

Until today. I bought some new fish last week, and what did I find today in the QT? A single duckweed plant. I just hope it doesn't teleport into either my main tank or the shrimp tank, so I'll be on the look out.

I've never really been good with plants. Last one I tried was a spider plant and I managed to kill that. But I haven't had too much trouble with aquatic plants. I might even try a plant only tank one day so that I can try stuff like CO2 injection or high lighting.

Duckweed is our friend. Pay no attention to tired old stories of it becoming a nuisance that cannot be overcome by mortal man. Duckweed is everywhere in the natural world and now it’s in your world. Welcome it.
I think Back In The Fold has been taken over by some sort of sentient duck weed…

I'm pondering getting rid of all the floating plants and replacing them with new. I have a clump of Anacharis floating that I like because it does a nice job of covering equipment and the fish like it. But I feel like that could be a good place for duckweed to hide.

do you have chickens? dry the duckweed and feed it to them. It's like a protein booster to them!

Lol no. Although the property I'm living on did used to have chickens when I was a kid.
A few years ago, I actually pondered the idea of raising chickens. Not as pets. I wanted to give them good quality food and then eat them myself.

extra protein-y chickens with duckweed!!
Then I would compost them. They don't die even after 2 weeks in moist compost but when they do rot, they are very good plant food

That's what I generally do with my plants I'm disposing of, the excess floating plants I remove or the trimmings from maintenance. I throw them onto a hillside where they won't end up in a local waterway. I never flush them or let them go down the drain or put them in the garbage.
