The ammonia in my 10 gallon tank was up a bit tonight (probably from that darn messy snail that was in there) so I did a 30% water change. Well when my husband put the water in the tank was all cloudy. Really bad. I added a little extra aquasafe thinking maybe the softener salt was low and there was more iron than normal in the water (that was his thought anyway). So anyway I went and ran a glass of cold tap in our kitchen, which doesn't go through the softener, and it is cloudy as well, so it's our water and not the softener. I don't know what is causing it but it might have something to do with all the rain we've been getting-the fields next to our house are flooded and maybe the well pit is too, making the water gross. At any rate I won't be drinking it but I have no alternate water to put in my tank. the fish are acting completely normal so far. Is there anything other than the extra aquasafe I can add? I have melafix, salt (but there are some little snails in there so I wouldn't want to add too much), biosafe and stresscoat. I can't get to town to get any water right now and I don't know how the weather will be tomorrow (it snowed tonight).

you could always buy distilled water from the super market

you could boil the tap water and then let it go cold, that may clear up the cloudyness, then use it to do the water change.

My fish are still alive and their tank water is much less cloudy-I guess those filters really work after all. My husband thinks that the ground water is getting into the well and is sure that it filters all through the ground so it's safe. at any rate the fish still being alive means it's not too contaminated. Either way we aren't drinking with it or cooking with it-hopefully it'll get back to normal soon. To complicate things our well pit filled up and shut off the pump so now we have NO water. Water everywhere but not a drop to drink. I hope that hand sanitizer stuff really does work (don't worry, I won't put my hands in my tanks with it on).

Now my dilemma is my 20g which I just added fish to, so I know I need to do a WC or it'll spike I'm sure. I'll test it tonight when the water is back on *crossing fingers that he can fix it* and if it's not spiking I'll wait.
