I've got the chance to buy one of these fellas but only know what I have searched for on this site

the question I need to ask is would it be a suitable tank mate for ornate bichir, fire eel, clown knife or would they be too boisterous for it. I suspect that they would need smaller less boisterous tak mates but thought would check first

Categorically not. These aquatic amphibians are best kept in their own quarters. They are very quiet and are easily damaged by aggressive or even clumsy fish. They need to be kept in tanks with a peat or sand substrate, never gravel. Sharp decorations like rocks must not be used either. As with any amphibian, damage to the skin allows "Red Leg" to set in (basically an Aeromonas infection similar to Finrot). Because they breathe through their skins, infections are very serious. For the same reason, avoid using any live foods that can bring in infections, e.g., tubifex or feeder fish. Stick with safe foods like earthworms.

With rubber eels, gravel can be used, it just has to be very round with no sharp edges. They are very hardy and safe with fish. I do feel that your tank mates might be too aggressive for them especially if the eels aren't full grown yet. They also might have trouble getting air if they are young, They do go to the surface to get air, which may be difficult in such a large tank. Most won't take pellets and earthworms are a favorite food. I really like these guys, they are really fun to watch and feed. They don't bother live fish and I think they need a 20g "long" minimum.

if I had a spare tank just for them I think I would cos they look like fascxinating fish but my tanks are pretty much taken for now although a friend of my wifes said they may be giving up on theirs!!!
