Just noticed one of my brevis shellies in my Tanganyikan tank has two small patches about 4mm diameter on his side that have a white fluffy growth on them. Looks like he has had a scrap with the other male. Hard to see clearly as he guards his shell always facing in the same direction, and the side that is affected is facing away from the glass!

He is swimming around fine, fins are open and he hasn't got any white spots or other symptoms, although I have noticed him rub against the sand a couple of times.

Although bith the spraybars from my filters are positioned to ripple the water's surface I have added an airstone just to make sure there is enough oxygen in the tank. I have melafix and pimafix in the cupboard, are these suitable and what dosage? Should I treat the whole tank (occupants are 4 adult brevis, 4 juvenile brevis about 1-1/5" long, and 5 julidochromis transcriptus) or remove him to another tank?

any help much appreciated! Many thanks, Matt

been trying just now tonight but he's gone to sleep inside his shell after the lights went out on the timer and wont come out again lol

did a 50% water change, not fun carting 150l of water round the house at 11pm at night!

I'll see how he is in the morning and try to get a pic.

Good job on doing a water change. You can never go wrong even though they are a pain in the :hey:.

Should I move him into a hospital tank or leave him in the main tank? If I move him, his female partner will have to come too as they both hide in the same shell as soon as anything scary happens and you cant get them out again seperately. I have a spare 10 gallon tank with heater, filter etc that can be set up very quickly if needed.

You could move him if you want too. Just make sure the 10 gallon tank your putting him into has a bacterial colony.

He looks a bit better today, tbh I think he's been bitten and it was a bit of excess mucus over the wound. White patch is smaller today. He's swimming around fine, fins look clear and in good condition and he's eating, so I increased the aeration in the main tank and dosed it with melafix. I'll keep an eye on him but don't think its serious.
