Hi all. Please be kind to the noob...
I've had the Edge for a few months and the Fishpod for a few weeks. Without going in to a long-winded back story, which would bore me to write let alone you to read , my tanks are now set up as follows.
The Edge has 4 x Green Tiger Barbs, thought I should start there as my username suggests I love these pretty little fishes. There's also a male swordtail, 2 x Buenos Aires Tetra (I think 1 M and 1 F based on size) and a single Serpae Tetra. I realise the later is not ideal on his own but there is a reason - part of the boring back story but in brief he had a tank mate but they were evil to each other and he killed the other. Many years ago I kept a couple of these guys with Guppy's and they were fine. In fact I even had a Rainbow Shark and a Red Tailed Black Shark in the same tank! But I digress... I have a handful of decent quality 'fake' plants, a moss ball, a couple of pebbles and a couple of pieces of slate with the black gravel scrapped away to create a cave (of sorts). I did have a pump/air stone on it too but that's on the new tank now. This tank must house some sort of Jamaican 'Drunk on Malibu and Coke' Tigers I think because they hang out in a group in the mid part of the tank and are completely at ease with each other. I haven't seen any hint of aggression of any kind, even at feeding time. They're first in line for food, even getting in on the act before the greedy BA's, but not a single hint of hassle.
The Fish Pod has a young (about 5 months) M Swordtail, 2 x (soon to be 4 x) M Odessa Barbs and 5 x Rummy Nose. It has light coloured sand but for contrast and those inhabitants that prefer it, dark coloured volcanic rocks and a volcanic rock cave to the one side/corner. There's that pump with two air stones in as well. It is also planted with real plants though this aspect is not 100% how I want it yet. This tank comes supplied with 'normal' light and a blue night light, and I must say the difference in the colour of the fish is quite striking and gives your tank a whole new look. The Odessa Barbs have their red stripe faded out to a yellowy colour and there are sparkles of blue that become more apparent. Similarly, the Rummy Nose lose their red nose in this light but a lime green spot on the top of their head shows instead and is equally beautiful and quite unusual. The latter generally stick to the bottom third of the tank in close formation (sometimes briefly looser but that's usually at night in the lower light), the Odessa's generally the bottom 2/3rds and the Sword actually tends to hang out pretty close with the Rummy's until or unless they go behind the plants. He also has a mad hour every now and again when he can be seen swimming repeatedly top to bottom of the tank. The Odessa's occasionally disturb the Rummy's when they're chasing but only in the sense that they completely ignore the Rummy's to the extent that they just swim straight through the shoal. The Rummy's simply move out of the way and quickly re-form, and seem entirely at ease with this boisterous behaviour. The Odessa's have started to chase very actively, actually I think it's quite one-sided which is why I want another 2. But that said it is definitely only chasing with no signs of 'nipping'. The one appears to immediately back off when the other goes behind/into the cave or into the plants. It seems he's established himself in the open part of the tank and has readily given up the more covered areas by way of compromise. Yet at other times they can swim quite close for some time without chasing. I'm pretty sure it's just a case of one establishing himself over the other but don't want to the run the risk of one being hassled more and more often until it becomes stressful for him. I'm thinking about something to populate the largely bare surface, perhaps a female 'fighter' as there are some stunning coloured ones out there and they lack the fancy tail which could tempt the Odessa's to be a bit 'nippy'. I've also got two LFS that have recently had some Endlers. Given their comparative rarity I quite fancy a small group as I heard they prefer the upper part of the tank. My other thought was whether Kuhli's on the bottom might tempt the others to swim a little higher, or would they all just be tripping over each other? Any thoughts and constructive criticism welcomed.
