Hey,

Bought two new birds today :D

One is a little cobalt/blue masked lovebird as a companion for my jade one! We also found out today that my one was male, so we've got a female blue one and its SOOOO pretty!!

Also.. I bought a Cape Parrot I'd never seen them before but i saw this one at the shop earlier. I went home and did some research and they seem very sweet cuddly birds. The one i saw was just SOOOO sweet! Really friendly and cuddly..

Anyway, i bought him! He wasn't cheap, but was several hundred £'s less than the ones i found on the internet. Apparently they're pretty rare and going to get even more rare in the future as they can no longer be imported into the country and in a few years they're going to be for 'specialist collectors' only!! :kana:

Anyway, here's the pics!!

Lovebird:

And some of the Cape :D We've called him 'Jake' as he seems to like saying it  But we wont know for about 18months if its male or female, but nevermind :D Anyway, you can see from the pics what a big baby he is!

wow well done on your find ! they are looooovely
I'd love to have some birds by my bf has serious "issues" with caged animals :/
I will live in hope that one day I'll be able to sway him :)

I always wanted a bird, but fish keeping snatched my passion first

Yeah.. I've got to admit im more into the birds than the fish, i've spent over £1000 on birds in the last couple of months :*)

I've just done some more searching for info about cape parrots and they're even more rare than i thought! From what i can work out, theres only 400 left in the wild (of all 3 sub species i think) and the one i have (brown necked) is the rarest if them... But its very confusing! All three species are endangered anyway :(

The love bird is very shy, but she isn't going to be a 'pet' as such, she's in a nice big cage, filled with toys, seed and fruit and is happily chirping away on her swing! The other lovebird is calling to her from my bedroom though which is a bit annoying..

I sure hope yours was captive bred then - I'm surprised they are even legal to sell if they are that endangered. As I'm sure you know, much of the reason many parrots are endangered is the pet trade. Though the massive logging all over the place sure has made its mark as well. ::sighs:: So many beautiful birds in such great danger.

Anyways, beautiful new birds!

 of course he was captive bred. Its illegal for pet shops to sell wild caught ones :) This one came from a breeder (THE breeder actually, theres only one in the country i think!!) in Wales. The guy i bought him from buys birds from specialist breeders at a few weeks old when they come away from the parents and hand rears them. So he was reared locally! :D

As i said, these ones aren't going to be available as pets for much longer, which is a good thing. But of course, a hand reared baby would never make a good breeding bird so i certainly dont feel bad for buying him :p

oh your cape parrot is beautiful! i am extremely jelous!

i love parrots - when i get my own place and some more room i would like a parrot of my own.

i have 2 budgies right now and they are spoilt rotten. :)

Ah, I just saw that you are in the UK. I think the US still allows for wild caught, or at least does not do much (read: anything) to regulate it.

I dont think i could keep budgies, they're SO loud  The Cape Parrot has yet to make any loud noises, but im sure as he gets older he will :D I wasn't actually supposed to get any more birds as my mum was moaning about cages being everywhere, but how could i not get Jake?! He's SO cute! And my lonely lovebird did need a mate....

And im sure some people in the UK do sell wild caught birds illegally (infact i know they do :( ) but i got Jake from a breeder who has a 'shop' in a local garden centre and he has all the relevant paperwork for his birds. And Jake has a PSUK ring which you only get on birds captive bred in the UK :)

Anyway... Here's some more pics of Jake..

(Thats weetabix on his beak!lol He has it for breakfast and LOVES it! :D )

Aww... I'd love a pair of lovebirds, but not sure whether I'd have the committment :/. And with 3 cats, not usre whether they'd get much exercise either :/ OOI, how much time do you spend with your male (is he tame?)
