Well I guess it really does not matter that much.
 
Size matters- there are dwarf species like the ancistrus and then ones that get much bigger.

there are ancistrus that get big too... Have a search on here for 'brocoli' :D
 
Yes, that would be important. I got a bristle-nose on the belief that it only grows to 5-6".
 
Okay, mine has spots. Light colored ones. I am not sure they are exactly white though.

thats the hard part... they have been interbread so much.

I'm fairly sure ours are ancistrus Temmincki.
The spots are very well pronounced and the females dont have any bristles.
