I dont think i'll be buying any bettas 'online' for a while :(

Some of you may have seen my photos of the three gorgeous male bettas i ordered from KG Bettas that arrived about a week ago. Well, i think i posted in there that they didn't look too great when they arrived. They started to look a bit better, the white spot cleared up and they were all eating, but none were particularly active and just led at the bottom of the tank. I tried melafix and stress coat and increasing the temp but they just didn't seem to get any better, but no worse either.

Anyway, i went away on friday, just overnight, coming back saturday and told my brother not to feed them as they weren't well and didn't want to risk him over feeding them! I checked on them when i came back Saturday and the Blue and red BF betta had died  I did a water change and put some meds in with the other two, and then last night i found the red one dead as well :-( I couldn't see any sign of illness or disease on them at all, i think they must have just not recovered from shipping.

The final one i have left, the orange plakat is still alive, but i dont think he will be for much longer.. Im all out of ideas of what to do for him so either he'll live or die i guess :-(

But after spending about £45 on them i dont think i can afford to have any more shipped as i will probably lose the whole lot!! So no more bettas for me for a while..

:( Sorry to hear about your fish...sometimes that just happens, you know. Doesn't make it suck any less though.

But 1 question though...if you saw no signs of disease or illness, why medicate them?

Sorry to here about your loss jess, why not come to me instead of posting on here as i will gladly replace any fish that have not made it within in a week of posting, ......just the cost of postage as cant refund that i would also question adding medication to fish that are OK like melafix it will stress and possible kill, a well fish and it can take up to two weeks for a fish to become fully active after shipping, and they will stay in active on the bottom ....... :)

Sorry to hear about your loss Jessica :byebye:

I have had 5 batches of bettas now from K.G.Bettas and have had different reactions from them.

Some just swim around and feed from day one as if they've been in the tank all their lives but most will appear shocked and stressed to various degrees and refuse point blank to eat for sometimes up to a week. I suppose when you think about it they are being caught and bagged up which will stress them. Then they are packed into a box and shipped out with a plane journey and then a car journey to Kevin's where he unpacks them and places them in his tanks.

I try to get the water temperature exactly right for them but the water chemistry is harder to replicate. Where they come from in Thailand though they have water that is rich in Indiand Almond Leaves and is yellow and a low PH. I have very hard water here in the Midlands and have found that to make my bettas happy I have to add IAL or Black Water Extract. I thoroughly recommend using it.

I did have one male betta contract Whitespot a day after delivery and he got it really bad, poor little chap, and was poorly for 2 weeks but with good clean water, salt and interpet meds he pulled through and is a happy little chapy today.

What I'm trying to say is that these guys do have a lot to put up with when they are shipped so give them lots of peace and quiet, nice clean water and of course love

I really hope your orange plakat recovers and that you will have confidence in buying more bettas in the future :)

hey, jessica, i had exactly the same problem. 2 out of 3 of my bettas died too from this shipment although they didnt show any signs of diseases. i thought maybe the post office was a bit rough with them and that stressed them to the point of them losing the will to live. :dunno: sorry you lost them too :(

Hi Blinky... yes but you did contact me straight away via email not a week later and through a forum and as i have also said to you the fish will be replaced it sometime happens that the fish just get too stressed that they just give up and no matter what you do they don't pull through but for anyone getting fish from a shipper just let them settle in don't panic and go adding medication because they are sitting on the bottom of a tank if there are signs of an illness then a little salt. but all you will do is stress them more and they will die i know that most shipper including my self will replace the fish, if arrive not, well and die, but it is down to the person supplying, i of course loose fish my self that come from my main supplier as i do have fish that don't make the week or sometime haven't made the trip from Thailand, it is something that cant be helped these are animals we are dealing with, and don't understand what is happening and stress is the main cause of fish arriving dead or not happy but i have posted 180 fish in the last week so having 4 not make it cant say thats its the way of posting they were just weak fish and better to go now so i can replace them

kevin.........

The med i used was melafix which, according to the bottle, is good for helping them to settle and if they're stressed. I always use it when i add new fish and haven't had any problems with it -_-

The orange plakat is still alive, though i am still treating him for white spot as it doesn't seem to be getting any better :/

I would certainly buy bettas from Bettaman again. He has beautiful fish and i've always had great communication and help from him. But i dont think i would have them posted again as it does seem to stress them. I've had a few that haven't been bothered at all, but it always seems to be the ones i want to breed from that get sick

If i get any more (no money at the moment so not an option yet!lol) i will drive up to pick them up :)

I think if you read his post..he actually offered to replace them free of charge.

I lost eight betta's over a period of four months this year, including a Rosetail from Stingrays. I stopped buying new ones for awhile. Stopped coming here too. A bit of depression I guess. Sometimes it just happens. Recently got two more plakats. Found them for less than $1 each. So I could not resist. Glad I bought them.

Sometimes they die and it is hard to figure out why. When mine started to die, I placed meds, and changed their diet. Ultimately, the dying stopped when I changed the water conditioner to one dsign for unstable water that detoxifies heavy metal.

Recently, I got two Synodontis Ocillefers, and one died two days after I brought him home.

Loosing fish is unfortunately part of the hobby. Don't loose heart.

RALLLLLLL!!!! :hyper: LTNS Good to see you around these parts!!! Don't be such a stranger lol.

Maybe you should try bottled water Ral..or try boiling it then let it sit for 24 hours .

i agree, jessica. i would certainly buy from bettaman again as it seems he has more concern for the happiness of the customer than others i have had to deal with in the past when something goes wrong. i also have a few good friends who have dealt with him before and had no problems so it looks to be just an unfortunate glitch this time round. when do you think the next shipment will be, kevin?

I totally agree, he has fantastic stock and i've never had any problems with ordering from him before, as you'll see if you check out all of my 'new bettas!!' posts
Its a shame i have lost these ones as they really were beautiful and i was planning on breeding the red male next as he had lovely finnage!

Bettaman has kindly offered to replace him for me though, so fingers crossed :)
