I got 6 albino cories 2 weeks ago. They all had little white strands on their fins, and while 2 died a few days ago (with deteriorating fins and no meat on their bones), the rest appear to have almost flawless fins and are of good weight ( which is hard considering my piggy pearl danios!). The remaining cories do tend to twitch, however. This happens several times a day. My danios don't seem to twitch, but they are so crazy I would never know. Other than that, they are wonderful. They do not rub on the gravel or decorations. Is this a problem? I don't have a hospital tank, so sadly that's not an option. Can you please advise me?

Thank you for any and all help!!!!!!

Can you show us a picture of the white strands on your corys. Also, what is your water quality? pH, GH, NO2, NO3 etc. This would help us greatly in seeing if there's a problem. You may have white-spot or a viral or bacterial problem, possibly due to stress and/or the water. What is your substrate? It may not be suitable for corys?

I hope these pointers lead you to an answer, or let you know how we can help more efficiently.

By "twitch" what exactly do you mean? Or are there noses pointed down looking for food? What temperature is your water? And to repeat what Sibelius said what are your water stats? What are you feeding them?

I took a look at your photobucket albumn....your substrate looks fine. From what I can see in the pictures they appear to be fine as well. Do you know how long they were in the store before you brought them home?

The only thing I could guess what you discribing as stringy might be some kind of fungus. Did it look like the fins/gills of the fish who didn't make it were covered in a cotton like substance?

I hope this information helps.

Last week when I tested the water there was no ammonia or nitrite, and nitrate was at 30 ppm. The pH is 7.6 ish. As of today, only 1 or 2 of the 4 cories has any little frays on the fins, and its only one or two. The others are completely healed. The dead fish did have white "hairs" but it was not cottony at all. It was individuals strands. Other than the occaisonal spastic twitch, my cories are getting bigger and doing great. I feed them and the danios Tetra flakes, tabmin tablets, freeze dried tubifex cubes, freeze dried bloodworms, frozen bloodworms, and shrimp pellets.
