Hi

one of my brother's turtle has a wound on its face below it's eye and goes down to its mouth (like 3 to 5 milimeters)... it could be a bite or a scratch from one of the other 6 turtles on the tank, my bro put her/him inmediatly on the mini hospital tank but we don't know what else to do

currently he has malachite green, aquarium salt and all of the other stuff to clean the turtles eyes so we don't know what to give her. She is also not eating at all(I'm guessing because of the pain)

Anyone has any ideas on what to do??? :(

alot of people take turtles to the vets to get treated!i think you aredoing the best you can but mabe you need to get advice from a pro?

Best thing to do would be take it to the vet like German said.

The only question I have is what kind of turtle is it and how big is this tank that it can comfortably house 7 turtles??? -_-

we have been to 5 vets an none of them treat turtles  and now my brother had to go to school ...anyway I was just told at another forum (specialized in turtles) to treat the wound with Nolvasan cream and Neosporin or any other antiseptic but I just iodine at teh momment. thanks anyway

I'll keep on my search of a vet through the yellow pages

btw: the wounded one is a Map turtle plus other 3, 2 Red-eared Slider and 1 Yellow-bellied Slider, they are still small (between 5 and 6 centimeters) sharing a 40Gal tank

I google searched "Repitle Vet Mexico" And came up with a few sites that gave a list of vets in mexico that treated reptiles and exotic animals. I have a list at work of vets that treat reptiles and exotics but it doesn't go outside of the US.

Don't know what part of Mexico your in but you could search google and find one close to you. I wouldn't use a oily or greasy substance on the turtle and iodine is just going to wash off as soon as he hits the water. I would use some kind of cream. Sulfadiazine cream would work really well but you would probably have to get that at a vet.

It would be best to keep him away from the other turtles. Maybe in a ten gallon tank with high humidity and warmth and just keep him on a wet towel until he's healed, that way there is no risk of infection from dirty water and he wont get picked on by other turtles. HTH

^^^Edit: Reread first post. I guess you already did that part :)

thanks thats pretty much what they said at the other forums, I'm supposed to put some of the antiseptic on its wound and leave her out of the water for at least an hour until it dries, then I should put it back on the hostpital tank with the minimum water level as possible to keep it wet enough and should do this at least 3 times a day. I think that in this case its easier to seach for a vet through the yellow pages than using Google but thanks for your advise

Hope I find one thats close to my house

I'm sorry, but a 40 gallon tank will NOT house all those turtles for very long. They will fight over food and bite each other, the water will get polluted and they will get infected.

yea, he knows that, we are going to move to another house in less than 4 months (maybe 3) and he is going to build a little inside pond or something like that for them, also the current tank is a bit long so it gives them space and has hiding places and stuff.

BTW, we found a vet that knows about turtles near my home and he gave her an antisepctic (no stitches or anything  ) and she eat something today, so I guess thats a good sign. :)

Now comes the tough decistion of putting her back with the others or not when she gets better, the weird thing is that she is not one of the smallest ones. Apparently my bro is going to have to re-arrange everything so that they get along better ... how??? ... I don't know

Ok, just wanted to make sure. The indoor pond thing is something I have been considering for a long time, but my parents won't let me build one, something about having "too many tanks in my room already"?!?! IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE TOO MANY TANKS?!?!?! O well, I hope that the indoor pond works out for him!

its funny because I've never thougth that this type of hobby would be entertaining (I've always been a fuzzy-dog owner  ) but I just started with fish last month and like two weeks after I got my first ones I wanted to get a bigger tank and more fishes and learn more about them... I even made one of those styrofoam backgrounds last week, so no, I dont think theres shuch a thing as TOO many tanks, if I had the money I would get more than one tank

btw: we are unsure on what the future for the wounded turtle would be, she is still very weak, it's eating flakes now (instead of the common bites) but just a couple a day and she just stands still with the head down most of the time
