turtle filter in fish tank(cycle) LOOK

Hey i have a wisper 40 on my turtle tank and the sponge media on it is full of bacteria can i take out the bio-bag(b/c it dont look to good i think it broke) and hook up the filter on my new tank to get rid of the dust from my gravel and to help cycle it
