Hey everyone, I have a very weird question,

I have a black molly that has a tumor on its side. It has been there for about a year and sadly slowly growing. At the point right now I think his days are shortly numbered, the tumor and his side seem to be like splitting open, it looks incredibly painful (i've tried getting a picture but can't figure out the right lighting to get anything in focus at the right angle as he never holds still). I don't know how fish feel pain or how their nervous system works, and I know you can't exactly take him to the vet and have him humanely euthanized or anything, but it's hard for me to watch and look at because it looks so bad. Is he suffering? Is there anything I need to do other than just wait for nature to take its course?

He still eats normally and swims around / activity level fairly normal, but is swimmingly slightly oddly and has started to like, tip upwards if he stops moving for a moment. Like, if he is going somewhere, the swimming looks normal, but when he slows down or rests his mouth starts to float towards the top, putting him in a more vertical position.

thanks in advance, my heart is hurting for this poor guy

Sounds like it’s time to euthanize him with some clove oil. I’m sorry.

oh man. That's what I was thinking might be the case. Had no idea that you could do that at home with clove oil, that part is a relief. I was fearing something more.... violent... It hurts me to watch him like this. but doing this is going to suck :(

Wise geek has a fairly descriptive step by step instructions. https://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-most-humane-way-to-euthanize-a-fish.htm
Does that seem right? or is there another place that has better ones?

That is correct. Except I use 3 drops of clove oil to water in bottle. Shake well and add a little. As fish drifts off, add a little more. Once asleep, add the rest and leave him in for 30 minutes. If no gill movement then you can bury him. No need for the alcohol. Good luck. This part of fish keeping really sucks! So very sorry.
