My Cat fish (Fatty) seems to be besotted by Dave (the Pleco) is this normal? Fatty is for ever following Dave around tank, rubbing up against him and generally snuggling up with him. He doesn't seem to mind. When I get rid of the fish will it bother them if I split them up? Seems a shame somehow.

It would kind of help if you told us what the fish were...telling us it's called Fatty and is a catfish isn't the most helpful info if you're expecting an answer.

What also seems strange is how you say 'when I get rid of it'. No fish should be bought with the intention of offloading it when you've had enough. Fish should be taken on by a person who expects to look after it for it's lifetime and who provides the right care and enviroment for it. Not someone who takes it on till they've had enough and then hands it back to the fish shop. It's a living thing, not a finding nemo dvd from Blockbusters.

lol got to admit there isn't a lot to go on, but really isn't that a bit strong? You only have to look for yourself to see that the OP is de-commissioning a tank and has asked for an ID on his plec in the only other thread posted

Also - aren't there a million and one reasons to want to "get rid" of something - not the nicest choice of words perhaps, but there are 101 legitimate reasons possibly behind it.

To the OP - its best I've found to avoid anthropomorphising the behaviour of your pets (i.e assigning them human characteristics) - I've only been in the hobby coming up two years but I've found it a lot easier to understand the animals and their behaviour if you don't map human concepts onto it. From the little you say I'm guessing this could be a territorial issue of some sort? Or the one fish could think the other is the closest thing to it in the tank (although afaik you see this more with shoaling fish who for whatever reason are without a shoal of their own type) and thus likes to be near to it. Those are just guesses though from what little you've supplied. I wouldn't be worried about splitting them up tbh, just that they both go to good (i.e suitable) homes with people who know what they're doing.

No I don't see it as strong...perhaps I have thicker skin than yourself but I don't see where I said anything which maybe construde as strong, just honest.
Plus I don't see why I need to research previous posts of his in order to find out the full facts. If the OP wants an proper answer it's up to them to explain it properly first time round, not expect others to have to find it out. It's a question, not a treasure hunt...

I thought it was a bit OTT too sorry Darkstar. Not everyone knows the ids of their fish, even the experts sometimes get stuck - if we all knew then there wouldn't be so many posts asking for ids all the time ;)

To the OP, I dont think it'd matter if they were split up, I doubt either would be heartbroken, obviously if they were the same species and a breeding pair it'd be different. I'm sure they'll be fine in their new homes :)

Fair enough, I've never been one to be anything other than blunt which I appreciate doesn't always come across well on a forum, but hey that's me.

I don't expect him/her to know their fish...we've all bought fish without knowing what they are at one time or another that's not my issue. However, if your breaking down a tank then I think it's a good idea to state that, rather that just write 'when I get rid of it'....which implies something completley different...and nor do I think it's up to me to go search his previous posts to find out why that might be the case. After all, many members on this forum and others have been reprimanded before for implying the same kind of thing....
