When it first got switched on it was quiet and it's got noisier, what could it be? It's brand new btw

cheap quality water pumps quite often make noise when running. It can also be air trapped in the impellor area, a worn or broken impellor shaft, a missing rubber gromet on the end of the shaft.
Check these things and if everything seems ok but it still makes noise then take it back and claim it under warranty.

Yeah I think I will save up for an external filter to be honest, I've done everything but it comes with the tank and I'm not taking that back!

Is the powerhead fully under the water, mine tends to make a noise if the top is slight above water level.. fully under you cant hear it..

Good point! I haven't finished filling it up yet. it's got about 2cm left to go, but I don't know if the pump fully submerges, I need to have a look... thanks for the tip

try to make sure its under the water level, this helps to stop it making a noise and also keeps it cool and stops it getting to hot.
Let me know if the noise stops when fully under water :)

It doesn't actually fully submerge
Really hating my filter!
Really wanting an external!
