Have set up my tank recently, and have just tested the water. Unfortunately I haven't got an ammonia test kit but it showed a trace of nitrites and a small amount of nitrates. Probably a fair bit of ammonia but I'm not sure at the moment!

The problem is the water in the tank is off the chart hard, I don't know the measurements but my tank is 5 gallons and the test strip showed approx 250 for dH. It had two different strips for hardness, they were both high.

Would doing a big water change with filtered water help?

Thanks in anticipation :)

PS - there aren't any fish in there!

It wouldn't be 250degress hardness. Probably 250mg/l CaCO3. Which is...around 15dH, which isn't that bad. Wouldn't worry abot it.
