well, I seem to be on a really bad roll here. First it was my jag, then I lost one of my biggest Angelfish, and now my Jewel has died.
I don't get it. And this is in 3 different tanks!

I noticed the Jewel this am, kinda leaning on her side and she seemed to be gasping heavily for breath. I checked everything I could and as far as levels in the tank and the only potential problem is nitrAtes.

I guess maybe there was something in what the owner of the LFS said about having troubles when the seasons change.

I have had those problems too. but not this year I guess I lucked out we shall see in the spring now though.

That's terrible missy. I'm sorry to hear that. I've heard quite a few people losing fish lately, including me of course.

I don't understand it.

What were your nitrates if you think they were high?

I'm glad I wrote the numbers down this morning.
They were 60ppm. My test kit indicates this is in the *safe* range, but the high side of the so called safe range. Everything else in the tank looks and is acting fine tho.

60ppm is a bit high but the bigger question is how long was it this high? If it wasn't that long then it's no big deal but prolonged exposure for weeks or months might be a problem, imo.

It hasn't been that high for very long. I tested the tank maybe 2 weeks ago and I don't think they were anything but maybe a trace.
The Jewel was a very strange fish as it was. She would pick a corner of the tank and just sit there with her fins held tightly to her sides like something was wrong, but no other symptoms manifested so I just held this to be her character. At least once a day, she would dart about the tank flashing on everything, then swim the length of the tank a couple of times and then go back to a corner. But she was like this for the entire time I had her which was about 7 months.
Go figure.

Thanks Juan for the sympathy.
