Trimming puffer beaks

actually, this forum sufficiently covers this topic kim.

pt, do a search in the oddball section (trim beak). lithril and pufferpack have discussed this in past threads. there is a link to a great article on the process. depending on the type of puffer you have though, you may never find yourself needing to do this, provided you give your puffer the necessary shellfish diet to keep that beak in check (though SAs for example have fast growing beaks that most end up having to trim regardless............)

As long as you feed hard shelled foods such as snails, clams & mussels, your puffer's teeth may never need trimming.

Pufferpack places food on a stone so that the teeth are rasped when the fish picks at the food. An excellent idea.

The only puffers that suffer commonly from excessive tooth growth are South Americans who may need trimming twice a year in some cases!
Not a job for the faint-hearted!

Ok, thanks guys.

Not that i own any puffers, but i was curious :p . Anyway, did a search, so basically you use an anaesthetic (sp?), then snip off the beak, and thats all? Sounds scary though

P.T.

Here's an example of an South American Puffer with seriously overgrown teeth

Awwww! Thats awful! Where did you get the pic from? Someone, go and trim his beak!

Yeah, I think you got it right in the fact that you anaethanatise (sp? ) them and just go clip. I agree with you on the fact that it sounds scary! :S

It came from the Aqualog book, The Puffers of Fresh & Brackish Waters, our puffer bible.

Where can I get it from, it looks pretty good to have a piccie like that in. I need a puffer bible too. My puffers will be much happier fishes!
