I guess I'm a noob when it comes to this topic, but I saw some interesting behavior this morning with two of my trillis. The largest one, I'm assuming a female, was and still is zooming up and down the glass. A smaller one, I'm assuming a male, followed her around the first few minutes, kind of nuzzling her along the way.

Should I start looking for eggs sometime soon? Where do we go from here? I was reading another post about peeling the eggs off the glass and putting them in a well-circulated net, etc. But I'm still trying to figure out if this is it!

I have bred cories several times before and used three different methods. But all included a breeding tank. I left the parents in there once spawn, took them out the next one, and the third used a razor blade to take the eggs off the glass then placed them into a rearing tank which had a big clump of java moss. If your cories have bred in a community tank I would siphon water right from your tank to a rearing tank and transfer the eggs. I guess you could put them in a breeding net, I was lucky in the fact that I got all the eggs in amoungest the java moss so I didn't to place them in a breeding net/container.

You will know when they start  lots of activity with lots of nudging etc followed by the T position  so it sounds like yours are keen :good: do a cold water change & feed them bloodworm, that'll spur them on :)

Heres my video in the back corner are 2 tri's getting ready to go into T position, you'll see the female lie to one side, whilst the male transfer the sperm, the female will be still for a few seconds, then will flit around looking for somewhere to lay eggs, normally under plants etc

And this one a lot of quivering before the t position

Has for egg removal,i've always found it easier to gently roll them onto your finger and transfer them into a net :good: but leave them for a 15-30 mins if you can so they can harden up,otherwise they'll pop when they're freshly laid.

Thanks so much! Invaluable information here that I have flagged for future reference!

You're welcome, have a looksie at my link on the panda fry today page,it has a link to my tri's breeding exploits,if you haven't already read it :)

So when we are talking about cold water changes, how exactly is this done? It has been really hot here for the last week or so, so I have been trying to nudge down the temperature, and perhaps encourage the cories a bit... but even 5 litres of cold tap water and another 5 litres worth of ice, just at melting point (and then dechlorinated) even repeated three times, doesn't even flicker the thermometer on 185 litres - the water can't be more than 4 or 5 degrees centigrade.

That said, the cories are going a bit mental this evening (5 peppered, 1 panda, the sole survivor of a panda plague), the whole tank is very active (not just the cories). There are clearly at least two females, and one of them is really quite fat now. I'm not especially trying to breed them but they had bloodworm this morning, and a cold change (about 30 litres) this afternoon (very hot here today) - will they just kind of get on with it when they are ready?

If they don't get on with it, does it cause any problem for the fat female? What happens to the eggs if they don't get used, as it were?

My pandas are acting very similarly today. (I finally got a good enough look at two of them to determine that one was female and one was male - the other three... :dunno:)

Anyway, I keep hoping that these guys will continue to show this activity come September, when I actually will have the time to try to raise some fry. In the meantime, if any fry happened to survive the gauntlet, great... If not, there's really nothing I could do to help them more than hurt them at this time.

Best wishes to both of you trying to spawn your cories...

KateW, I would recommend doing larger scale water changes to drop the temp more significantly. In the grand scheme of things, the difference between 4-5 Celsius and 28-30 Celsius is not that great (on a molecular level). To draw more energy from the large quantity of water, you need to add a lot more water at a lower energy level. Either add more water that has a little less energy, or add a little water that has a lot less energy.

Doing a 50% water change with water at 20C, will drop 30C water down to about 25C. Doing a 10% water change with 0C water (liquid water at the freezing point) will drop 30C water down to 27C. So, if you want to actually bring the temp down, merely 5 liters of water is not going to have a significant effect, unless that 5 liters is ice at about -10C. Your tap water will probably about 10-15C. If you added about 20-30% of that to your tank, the temp will drop down significantly... add it slowly so that the difference isn't too fast for the fish.

Im starting to think that its not only the change in temp but also the change in water pressure that the fish feel when a certain amount is removed from the tank.

Very possible... And a decrease in pressure would also emulate rain, as rain usually happens when the barometric pressure is lower. I hadn't thought of that before.

Thanks for the helpful comments eagles and tizer. As it happens I did a bigger cool water change and more thorough clean today, and just as I packed away all the bits and pieces, I noticed some eggs on a leaf :good:

I have pulled the leaf off the plant, and managed to scrape up another few eggs as well. I have put eggs and leaf if a net, weighed down with a pebble, and have suspended it all above an airstone. Will this all be OK until I can get a breeding trap tomorrow? I am currently cycling a sponge filter in my QT tank but it is nearly done -I'd like to give it at least a few more days if possible.

Is there any problem leaving the leaf in there as long as it isn't rotting or breaking down? There is a bit of algae on it, so surely that must be a source of nutrition for any fry that make it?

Mama cory is still going a little bit frantic by the way
