On my sons tank (our first) we have what I think is a trickle filter (its an all in one tank). Shown in pick below, And also the DIY filter I made for my tank. I'm just making sure/questioning A) what it is, is a trickle filter and B) how good they are as the aquarium book I have rates trickle filter quite highly.

The left hand image is my sons all in one tank fairly easy pump brings water up, trickle across filter media (small porus rocks) into a sponge underthem and then out a little funnel type thing on the left.

My DIY filter uses a cheap Power filter with sponge and activated charcoal to pump water up to a container holding porus rock media on top of sponge, from here water trickles/flows out bottom of container into another container, 3Liter juice bottle  and out bottle spout. This will get built into a proper filter (instead of container mounted in juice bottle  ) when my hood gets built in the next 2 weeks or so

Trickle filters have a good biological action because the media is exposed to the air thus has a high Oxygen uptake potential which helps the bacteria.
