does anybody here have a tank with a trickle filter? i dont have a good idea about the practical aspects of a trickle filter. what are the pros and cons of a trickle filter? what maintenance wpuld it require? how would it compare to a power filter?

This thread, contains a link to a description about the filter.

I don't own one, but I plan to some day. The main parts consist of an overflow (to allow the water to trickle to the filter), the sump, and the pump. The sump can actually be just a regular plastic tub or even an aquarium to hold the water.

It is simple and easy to maintain, but can be noisy, since it trickles the water from the main tank to the sump. Depending on the size of the sump, it can allow room for a greater amount of media, compared to other filters. It is normally used on larger aquariums.

i have an Aqua one 850 which has a trickle type filter system in the canopy. it has a spray bar that is fed by a power head. the water trickles through fine white foam then over ceramic 'noodles' and finally through 1" coarse media. the water then travels along a chanel and through a chute producing a venturie action for maximum airiation and surface aggitation. the filter compartment is easily accessed from the top by removing flaps. cleaning is also easy. the fine media shows when clogged being white and a quick squeeze out in old tank water is all it needs. as it deteriates it is cheap to replace if you buy it in small sheets from the pond department of you LFS. the noodles and lower coarse media need very little maintenance as they stay clean and the bacteria is invisable. as there are 2 compartments i alternate (a month apart) between them when cleaning the lower media. My stats are good and fish are happy.....nuf said!
