Treating Ick

The instructions on the medication I got for ick say to remove carbon filter when putting the drops in, and then repeat daily for 12 days until ick is gone.

Does this mean I leave my filter out for this whole time? Isn't this bad for the tank? The biological filter is still active.

chances are that the ich is also in the filter. you shouldnt have carbon in all the time anyways you just need it to clean the ich meds out at end of treatment.

This person is probably using an Eclipse tank (like me). The filter cartridge has the carbon inside (underneath the filter sponge). Therefore, you can't take out the carbon unless you remove the entire filter cartridge.

I have one tank that uses a whisper filter that has that type of filter cartridge. I open the cartridge and dump the carbon out. Crude but if its the only choice you have then its the way you have to go.

You are correct... I have an Eclipse tank and the filter has a layer of carbon in it. I removed the whole thing and will administer the ick medication for a couple of days along with water changes. Hopefully it will work out, I won't keep it out of the tank for too long though...
