Hi guys...

Just a little problem...

I've got a group of 7 cories....3 bronze, 3 peppered..1 unidentified...(same shape, size etc as others...just different colouring) they all seem to have torn fins...doesn’t look like fin rot (not reddened at all) and they are all getting along like normal... i wondered whether this could be from fighting between themselves (establishing hierarchies etc..)...i have seen them 'playing around' but nothing that looked too serious and i did think that cories liked each other and should be in groups

The only other possible reason i could think of was that recently I’ve introduced a pair of julidachomis (African cichlid) who, I was told by a very good lfs, should be fine with the fish I have in that tank (mostly a mix of tetras, the cories and 3 ottos). I have seen the larger one (the female I think) be a bit hostile but never seen her actually get hold of them…

So is it the cories getting a bit excited??? Or the new julidachomis??? And is there any suggestions on what I can do…. For the next few day my hospital tank will be occupied and my other tank has a male blue ram which I cant mix my julidachomis….

Any ideas??? (thanks!!)

Corys are one of the most peaceful and freindly fish you could posibly get, what you are veiwing between them is not fighting but playing with each other establishing bonds between each other which they do on a regular basis and nothing nasty at all :) .

I don't know alot about cichlids so i couldn't say on yours but from i have gathered many cichlids(apart from growing large) can be a bit aggressive, so just keep an eye on yours and see if it picks on the corys.
On the other hand, you seem to say the corys already has torn fisn when you got them? What fish were they in with in the lfs?

the corys were fine when i got them ... i've had them a few weeks now... (sorry wasnt very clear)...

the cichlid species i chose are quite a small one, which is 'suitable for community tank'... i listed all the fish i had in the tank before buying and the guy said they would be fine... i guess being a cichlid though that at time they will be territorial especially when breeding...

so do you think the torn fins could all be part of their 'getting to know each other' stage??? perhaps i should keep an eye on them for the next few days and see if it passes.... by then hopefully i'll be able to move the julidachroms into the hospital tank if theres still problems

As i said before, corys aern't violent at all and would never hurt each other so they would not be responsable for the torn fins, if the cichlid is ok with them, then i'd definatly say your corys have finrot and somthing should be done about it soon  .

Thanks for the help!!

it doesnt really look like fin rot.... think i will post on the African Cichlid bit and see if i can get some more ideas of the behaviour of my cichlid

:)
