I have a fan tail gold fish that recently started doing summer salts all the time. Someone told me that this has something to do with it's bladder. Is it something that is contageous or that can be transferred to any other fish in the tank? How long will it live with this problem? Is there anything I can do for it to cure it?

Hey, welcome to the forum :) I'd say your fish has swim bladder disease. I believe the swim bladder's basically an air sac that fish compress or expand according to where they want to stay/go in the water. Swim bladder disease can occur due to birth defects, severe stress, bad water conditions, bacteria, or constipation. Since it's usually constipation, I would say try not feeding for 3-4 days, then if he's still having problems, feed either defrosted & skinned pea/s or daphnia (water fleas I think they are). If this still hasn't helped, it could be a bacterial infection, so consider treating with a med. I'm not sure which one/s are best for this, but hopefully someone else who is will be along soon. Goodluck :)

Not sure how your fish is doing now, but if it does have somthing to do with the swim bladder, then there is not to much you can do to help it. Dont get down or stressed about it keep posted on whats going on. Is your water ok?
