Top fin filiter stop working

When I woke up I noticed my filter not working when I went to check it was dry in the inside then when I went to take it off I noticed it was hot so I put a air stone in. Does anyone know how to fix it or is it broken?

Sounds like it lost the siphon, ran dry, and then burned out the motor.

It’s 6 months old it’s been on the tank since it was set up I’m probably gonna buy the same one and put the old cartridge and bio plate on it.

If you are buying a new filter consider that the Top Fin filters don't provide much space for filter material. There are a number of other brands that will typically work better, I like the AquaClears. I have had a couple of top fin filters, both have needed to be replaced, but primarily because they were too noisy. All the HOB filters have an issue if the siphon is lost but some handle it better than others. My Aquaclears have still worked if run dry but it has never been more than a day dry. Your Topfin might still work if you restarted it. If your filter goes dry it might mean you do not have the water level high enough to maintain the siphon after a power outage or other stop of flow.

a power outage on low water will definitely drain the filter.
