my boyfriend bought me a tank (60cmX30cmX30cm ~ which i think holds 45litres?) as a christmas present, he's done the whole fishless cycling etc and he has also bought me the fish. As i didnt really know much about keeping fish i've been researching the fish hes bought me etc and i'm worried that he's bought me too many fish for the size of the tank.
I have:
5 Glowlight Tetras
1 Angelfish
1 Silver Shark
1 Bristlenose Catfish
1 Clown Loach
1 Dwarf Gourami
2 Golden Gourami (that was the name on the reciept, however i cant find any info on these)

It would be much appreciated if anyone could tell me whether there are too many or whether any of them aren't compatible. At least then i'll be able to make an informed decision on which ones i may have to take back to the store!

thanx! :)

Your tank is about 8gallons, everything unfortunatly though is too large or highly suitable for it apart from the tetras and gouramis, and they alone have pretty fully stocked it anyways- its best you rehome the other fish as they will die in the tank otherwise.

Nah-ah, the 'golden gouramis' ae a colour morph of the 3 spot, get to 6" if I remember... Far too big... By the dimensions, I'd say 15US gallons at the very most.

seems strange to me that your boyfriend knows enough about fishkeeping to do a fishless cycle but then goes ahead and stocks the tank with such unsuitable fish :/ you either need a much bigger tank or to start trying to rehome them :( this might be a good chance to get your boyfriend to buy you a bigger tank ;)

he's done the whole fishless cycling etc

Which involved what exactly...? Using products like Cycle nd similar will do nothing, and since it was a chirstmas present, it seems nowhere near long enough for a fishless cycle... unless it was a very early present.

the tank is 15us gallons

After adding gravel though, that will go down about 3 gallon. So yes, very over stocked as everyone else has said.

And the end size of the fish is going to be a problem, its not just a waste problem.

Id be seeing your LFS again, they may take them back, keep the dwarf gourami and tetras. maybe get a pair of female dwarves to replace the ones leaving. but even that may end up pushing the tank. depends on filter id say at that point.

Hi icecoolkitten :)

Welcome to the forum! :flowers:

While your boyfriend made a lovely gesture, I think he got a little too carried away. :hyper:

You will have to return some of the fish or you will have problems very quickly. Even if these fish are young now, there are still too many in there. They will soon pollute the water, become sick, and die. Even if he cycled it with BioSpira, which is actual beneficial bacteria, there are still too many fish to keep healthy.

But, you are in the right place to find the information you need to get things right. And don't feel bad about this. Many of our members started out with overstocked tanks and now have thriving ones. You and your boyfriend can do the same. Just keep asking questions and you will get all the help you need.

I'll be looking forward to seeing your posts on the forum. :D

And when you take a few of those back, just hold out on adding the ones you take back, the nitrosomas and nitrobacters need time to catch up on the bioload anyway. You are testing the ammonia right?
