i think these filters have been questioned on here in the past with mixed reviews...

Never tried one, i've heard mixed things. Then again i've heard mixed things about the Fluval 205/305/405 range and i don't mind them. For that price its worth trying in my opinion, if it fails to do what you expect you can always sell it on. You may lose £10 or so selling it on, it all depends if your willing to risk a slight loss. If it were me in need of a filter i'd give it a go personally. The classified section here can help you shift it on if its not quite what you require aye ;)

Certainly looks interesting, the seller is taking pre-orders for a new 2000lph version coming out in August for £75 including media... Puts the price I paid for my Eheim 2078 without ceramic media at silly money!

Yeah I see what you're saying ablout giving it a whirl, especially for a brand new one it is really cheap. It is going to be used to filter 2 tanks, one on top of the other with an overflow. It's either one of them or a 2nd hand Fluval 305/Eheim/ Tetratec 1200, just can't decide which way to go although I don't need it just yet so may hang on to see what bargains become available on here and on eBay.

I have both the 1400EF and the 2000EF models from them. They both work very well, and seem well put together for the price.

The negatives are that the media included is rather minimal. They are also a tad noisier than the fluval/Eheim equivalents.

If you're on a very tight budget they are worth a go.

Thanks hamfist, I'm not too fussed about the noise as it will be in a room where I am not going to be that often. As for the media, can more be added to the filter?? I was wondering if the filter did not have much room for media or just the fact that it does not come with much media.

Masses of room for media, just not much included.

Sounds like they might be perfect for you.

Hi Hamfist, rather then PM you for my own needs I thought it might be better to revive this thread to ask you something...

Would you definitely suggest buying the top-up pack to use immediately and add to the supplied media for the 2000EF as advertised at...

Would you say this media kit was worth buying to use in my Eheim 2078 as a cheaper alternative to the official Substrat Pro and Efmech?

IMO, the best use of your money for top up media for the APS filter is in buying ceramic biomedia only. The media kit that you linked to only contains 1kg of ceramic biomedia. For the same money you can buy about 2kg of ceramic biomedia, if you look hard enough.
Personally, I think the carbon is fairly useless. the bioballs are simply not appropriate for an external cannister filter, as they take up way too much space for their limited surface area. The filter floss in the media kit would be useful in the future but is not something the media that comes with the filter is short of.
