Hi Peeps,Ive read through this site before i posted but im still unsure about the answer.Anyway here goes,im currently treating my community tank with an internal bacteria and have added 4 tablespoons of tonic salt in my 40 Gallon tank which i have bronze and albino corys in.Im just wondering if they will be ok as your feelings on this site about salt and catfish are very mixed!?! :/

Hi jonny-5 :)

If you mean regular aquarium salt, it's perfectly fine and safe for corys, but only when used for a limited period time, for medicinal purposes. The problem with salt is that corys do not have it in their natural waters and have never developed a way to eliminate it from their systems once it is absorbed through their skins. If you use it for an extended period of time, it will eventually ruin their kidneys and livers and they will suffer an early death.

Once you have completed the treatment, and your fish have recovered from their bacterial infections, do not add any more. It will soon be removed from your tank through good water changes. :D

Its that Doc Wellfishes Aquarium Salt in a box and yes i am only using it till treatment is complete, which will be v.soon i hope!!! Ive had to be ruthless and cull the bad fish cos there has been no change in there condition despite endless treatment(s) :(
