Tanks DG

they can be finiky corals but easy ones at that, check ur meters and prehaps do water change but other than that just wait a while it will come out again, mine goes in big fat moods and dont come out but when it does it comes out fully.

Nitrates?
Phosphates?
SG?
Temp?
Any recent deaths (invert or fish)?
Any recent additions (inverts, fish, rock)?
pH?
Any other corals and how are they doing?

might be a toxin you cant test for ticking it off. do you run carbon and if so how often do you chane it?

That is common for most leathers. When it acclimates to your tank it will come back out. Leathers will also do this when they are growing. Sort of like a crab molting. Don't mess with it, it only causes more stress.

all other corals in my tank are growing like mad (polyps, and ever other leathers). no fish or invert deaths. all my params are fine. dont run carbon, and i run a skimmer during the day, and i dose with trace elements everyweek.got a few pest anemones running around the tank but when i see em i inject them :D

only thing i think is lacking is my lighting as i am only running 2 t8s one is a triplus tube and the other is a actinic blue tube, but i am gonna upgrade to either dual t5 or MH when i get payed next.

My toadstool has been open since day 1, like you said maybe its the lighting I am running VHO. Are you using tap water? When I ran tap water nothing really wanted to open up when I switched to RO about a month or two back the corals are huge and spread like wildfire now.

Might be lighting or some toxin you cant test for. If you have the ability to run a little carbon it couldn't hurt to try. Maybe you'll pull somethin out that you cant skim...

Die Grinder...what are you dosing your tank with? Are you measuring for what you are dosing? Eg, do you know if you have iodine toxicity? I'm not trying to flame you...just cautioning. The only dosing your tank needs is calcium. Dosing unnecessary trace elements will set you up for an algae bloom or killl something.

Because your corals are doing well now, doesn't mean you won't get whacked. The tank is too small to roll the dice with. My advice to you is to slow it up (a bit). Stop dosing your tank injudiciously. If you don't, at least buy test kits for strontium, molybdenum, iodine (you must test free iodine, iodate and iodide).

As for the leather, it is probably acclimating. They will all shed a waxy coat if unhappy. Keep an eye on it..they CAN nuke your tank if they die. SH

kool. i am dosing my tank with kent marine essential elements, will pick up a few more test kits when i next get payed. how will i know if its dieing or dead?

It won't open and turns a brownish color. Don't buy the test kits. Stop the dosing. Just invest in a calcium and kH test kit for now. That's all a new tank needs besides the other basic water tests. SH

ok kool, it says on F&S that they need added trace elements :S

Correct, usually replaced by regular water changes. Dosing really only become snecessary when your tank is COVERED with corals that gobble up the trace elements faster than you can water change them back in ;)

ahhh ok so would you guys reccomend me not to does at all or just to add one drop per week? oh and good news my toadstool has opened :D :D :D
think it got the message when i walked outta the room saying "i am gonna take that toadstool out tonight after work coz i think its dead :p". i get home and hes shedding a layer and is open :D.

now i am gonna feed my tank :D. i love it when i see them eat up my home made mix :D, its even better to watch em gobble live foods tho ;)

thanks guys DG

Glad it opened up :good:
Mine has already attached to the surround rocks, just wait they are quick to get adjusted and they get HUGE! My LFS has one that he had in there for about 4 years and the thing is like a foot and a half tall and the top is about 12 inches wide!
