i have got a toadstool leather for awhile now. the problem I am having is it is growing to big. (almost 10 " across last time i measured) the "lid" is starting to grow so big that it is up against a huge rock in my tank. the lid is starting to fold back on itself so it can continue to grow. I have put a rock at the base of it to stand it more straight up... well the base grew over and around that rock. I can not move the rock it is growing up against. so my questions are
1. will it be okay growing like this?
2. is there a way to trim the "lid" and almost start a new frag from it.

Any ideas would help

Yes...you could actually frag the leather. You can cut it and affix pieces of it to live rock with a rubber band and it will adhere and grow into another leather. You could even offer to sell them or trade it with other reefers in your area. Some leathers may release a toxin when injured (not against you), so, you may want to do this in a separate bucket. Good luck....you might be starting an new business now. SH

so is a toadstool leather toxic??? or can I cut it in my tank? its attached to a very large piece of live rock that is basically at the bottom of the tank with lots of other live rock on top of it.

hey blout what if it is a good specimen? would you still cut it out of the water or would you put in a bucket of tank water and cut it in the water in the bucket? or will it be okay for awhile out of water while I cut it?

also it is a umbrella leather. so i have heard the best way to do this is to cut the entire "cap" off with about an inch of stem underneath the cap. that way it is easier to get the cut off cap to attach to a new rock. how does this sound? i fragged some of my spaghetti finger leather yesterday. both the parent and the frags are doing well.

just follow that guide and you will be fine, the main reason i fragged my one is because there was something living in its base rock that was eating it.

i would defenetly take it out of the tank because it will leak toxins into your tank, dont be affraid of fragging it, as this was my first time and now my 2 pieces are thriving and look much better for doing it.

the other option is you take it back to a shop and do some exchangeing with them :D
