To Switch on the Filter or not

Just keep the filter running on all the time, non-stop.

Eelzor is right  you must never switch the filter off unless you are going to be removing it from the water, the bennefitial bacteria that live within the filter start to die off rapidly once the flow of water through the media ceases which would send your tank into a mini cycle or worse even back to start so the tank would have to be cycled again.

If you're new to the hobby and don't have anyone to teach you, there are a lot of things that might seem obvious to us that aren't to someone else. I was like this when I started out. I had no idea how to do anything and noone to ask either.
