I found an OLD 2.5 gal tank in my basement. I dont remember using it, but its been used and never cleaned after the fish I had..

Whats the best way to clean it to be safe for another betta?

its glass, yep.

hot water for sure :). any other suggestions? I'll try what I think is best

umm use warm water but check for leaks and that and make sure it hasent been sed for anything else other that fish

I cleaned my 30 gallon out with a tablespoon of bleach and boiling water. I took it outside onto my driveway, scrubbed it, and let it sit in the sun. Then I rinsed it out with the hose until I was sure no bleach could be left. Then I rinsed it again. Then set it up with extra dechlorinator (since it takes care of chlorine, and chlorine is in bleach.) and let it sit for a day, then did some water changes. I'm paranoid. I know.

the tank looks in perfect condition.. just really dirty. an dI know its been used for fish because it still had old gravel and silk plant which I threw away.

Okay, well if you REALLY want to clean it and kill EVERY possible thing that's in there, here's a recommended bleaching method:
Fill up the tank with 20 parts of scalding hot water, 1 part clorox bleach. Let sit for 20 minutes. Dump out.
Fill back up with scalding hot water and LOOOOTS of dechlorinator. Let this sit for oh, like 5 minutes or so. Dump it out - then rinse it about 40 more times, everywhere.
THEN... go turn on your shower just as hot as it will go.
Set the tank under the shower for 20-30 minutes or until you're satisfied that it's clean.

OR, if that whole business makes you nervous, do the exact same procedure, except with hot water and LOTS of salt. And you can skip the dechlorinator level. Just make sure you rinse, rinse rinse it.

:)

Hmm - after reading your coments, if it's just really dirty I'd give it a good scrubbing with some really hot water and salt, and let that soak. That should do it. :)
