Hope I picked the right section for this question...

Anyway I am planning on getting some North Queensland zebra shrimp and have been advised that they need purigen in the water/ filter other wise they will just drop like flies. However my dilimea is I don't use ferts in my tanks (the plants are growing great without them) and I don't use Co2 injection, so I am a bit concerned that by adding purigen and its ability to remove orgaic compounds that I will then have to muck around with ferts etc to keep my plants happy. Can anyone advise if by adding purigen to my filter, if I will need to also find shrimp friendly ferts etc. The tank that I am planning on adding the North Queensland Zebra shrimp to only houses corydoras, Borneo Suckers, and some cherry shrimp at the moment and the only new additions will be the N. QLD Zebra shrimp.

Thanks

I use purigen and it is excellent.

I can't see how not using it would lead to the deaths of the shrimp though. Water changes and filtration would surely be enough?

The only thing it changed in my tank was the clarity, the parameters have always been 0-0-5 no matter what.

unless it has something to do with the TDS in the water, then i agree with minnnt. Purigen will get rid of some organic compounds which leads to high TDS. So whether North Queensland zebra shrimp live in areas with low TDS i wouldn't bother. Who has advised this?

it's all the rubbish in your water TDS is Total dissolved solids.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_dissolved_solids

where i live the TDS sits at around 600, which is really high. If i was to use tap water without Purigen i get a haze to my water.

The person who collected the shrimp has advised having purigen in the filter. The shrimp come from extremely pristine high country rainforest creek(s) in a very limited area. I also plan to get some false Zebra shrimp that are also found in North QLD but these guys are a lot hardier and can be found lower down the creek systems even in extensively farmed country side.
