Tissue Culture Gel

[Just Add Water]

I just planted a few new plants that had been grown as tissue cultures. I could not get 100% of the gel off of the roots. Can the gel harm my fish? 10 gal tank. Added 5 tiny Crypt Parva’s yesterday, have a dead guppy today.
Water has been stable for quite a while.

I have never used cultures as to planting but I would think that such should be safe for fish or it would make no sense to supply such for aquatic use. I'm just guessing as I've never used such a planting method.

Were there instructions included with the cultures?

The instructions are:
Rinse and wash them under clean water. Divide into small portion, plant directly into your substrate.

Tissue culture gel is normally agar, fertiliser and a hormone to encourage root development. They usually stop adding the hormone once the plants have roots. The amounts involved are unlikely to cause any problems to fish. If it was poisonous then all the fish would be gasping or dead.

If you only had the guppy for a week or two, it probably had a disease when you got it.

The photo of your tank shows gold mollies but I can't see any guppies. Mollies need water with a GH of 250ppm (or higher) and a pH above 7.0. Your GH is a bit low for their long term health. You could add a Rift Lake water conditioner to increase the GH.

Thank you for the info @Collin_T. I’ve had all of the fish for about a month. The picture was taken just after the guppy died, to show the crypt.
