I have setup a 55 gallon tank and it has 3 bala sharks, 1 pleco, 1 pangasius catfish ( Yes I know they get huge ) and 2 african cichlids which I cant return to the pet store. I wanted to get some tinfoil barbs and silver dollars. Ive read they need to be kept in shoals so how much should I get of each.

in reality you don't have space - TF's get to 13" and SD's get to around 8"

when you consider that balas, the pleco (assuming its a common) and the pangasius all require a much larger tank, adding more large fish is just going to add to your problem

and the tinfoils grow fast at an alarming rate and eat so much and create a lot of waste. don't get me wrong they are great fish as are the silver dollars of which I have 8 large ones, they just need more space than you can offer. Either upgrade your tank or think of an alternative

The plecos get HUGE!!!! So do the bala sharks. You do have a big tank, and just a couple silver dollars might be fine, but i don't think you should add the tinfoil barbs.
