Ok this is a dumb question I know but I want timer plugs so the lights on my 3 tanks come on and off at set time without me having to remember all the time. But how does that work if the light has on on off swith on the tank? Do you know what I mean? They're all plugged in now but not on until I sitch the switches. So how would a timer plug do it?

Leave both the switch on the tank and the socket turned on at all times. If you then just set the timer to the desired on and off time, the lighting will be controlled by this alone.

It is an adapter that the plug goes into and then it plugs into the socket. The simple ones(which is what you need) have a 24 hour mechanical dial clock that you set at the current time, and little pins around the edge which you push down to set when the power will go through the plug and when it will not. You leave the light switch on and it will cut the power to the plug when you set them to go off, and allow power to the plug when you need them to come on....... Simples

.............can pick them up at places like B&Q etc....cheap as chips too.

Leave the switch on the tank in the on position, then plug the lead from the lights into the timer and then the timer into the wall socket.
I got my timers from Maplin very simple type you just move tabs in out out to set time periods, they are about £8:00. http://www.maplin.co.uk/24-hour-segment-timer-32996

After paying postage I think you'd be better off looking in a shop. Wilkos, poundstretcher, instore, b&m, b&q, Argos, supermarkets etc.

I got 3 digital ones from argos for just over a tenner, I went for digital because the tanks are in my bedroom and the manual ones can have a faint ticking, clicking and whirring to them as they go round, it was driving me potty at night.

this thread reminded me to go get some digital ones, my local B&Q had a 3 for 2 on digital ones, fiver each. argos had a 3 pack for 15 quid, but i only needed 2. though obviously i took the free one from b&q. they aren't too bulky either.
