Tiger Shovelnose

Tank is far too small, the TSN gets to 4 feet long. Minimum size really would be a 12x8x4.

Also, TSN are known to eat rays by swallowing them tail first and folding the disc up like a taco.

Basically, I woudn't.

A zebra shovelnose (Brachyplatystoma tigrinum) might be a better option as it tops out at two feet, but watch the price...

i just googled the zebra shovelnose and they are beautiful  i didnt realise tigers got to 4 foot

You really dont want to keep anything of value with a TSN, they have a habbit of being able to swallow fish you were sure they wouldnt be able to eat.
As Andy said a tank or pond with a foot print of AT LEAST 12x8 is needed for the long term care of TSN.

Heh... learn something new every day. :D Would've thought the stinger deterrent enough but I guess not.

tigs start at around £200 for a 3-4" fish and then up into the thousands for bigger ones. Buy the biggest you can afford as they are very delicate and the smaller they are the more likely they are to die. I havent been confident enough to buy one yet.

thats quite pricey but they are very nice.why are they so hard to keep alive when small?if your not confident enough to keep one i dont think i got much chance.that dont mean to say i wont try tho  i definately want a big cat for my new tank.any other suggestions much appreciated

I agree or you could organise a indoor pond, but if it's the long shovel nosed cat fish your after why not try a lima shovelnose catfish great cats.

I'm currently growing out 2 sun catfish so i can sell one or trade for a lima shovelnose catfish and i'm keeping the other one.

how about some sort of pictus? what size are you looking for btw? how about perrunichthys perruno?

:good:

True perruno catfish have rarely if ever been imported into the UK and are very rare even in their native range, the species most commonly imported under the name of perruno are Leiarius longibarbus (formerly marmoratus) which grows to around 3 feet in length and Liearius pictus which grows to around 2 feet in length. Leiarius pictus would be suitable for your tank but some can be very aggressive toward tankmates when full grown, they also have gluttonous appetites and can make feeding difficult for less boisterous tankmates.

What about the flash zebra shovelnose Brachyplatystoma jurense? These reach around 30" full grown and have markings similar but less striking than the tigrinus and are more affordable at around £80-100 for small specimins.

sorry only going by what i've read. how about leiarius marmoratus, false perrunichthys? i think they grow to 20inches and i saw 1 in my LFS that was sold and was labelled perruno.

:good:
