i have just found 2 adult tiger fish in a little shop near me they have been in a display tank for 2 years and look very healthy.they are asking £200 for the pair  this seems a lot i know but i have never seen any anywhere before and he told me they are very rare is this true??does this sound like a reasonable price to you??

hmm.. adult tiger fish? African TigerFish (Hydrocynus)? how big are they? do you know how big they get? If they are ATF's then get them.. as long as you've got a monster tank. I have 5 small ones, and they're the best fish in the world..

A fish is worth as much as you want to pay to get it really!

Although I'm sure if you put a slightly lower sensible offer in they wouldn't turn you down.

Do you know exactly what species they are? There's some which will be worth more than other species.

when i asked what species they were he told me they were the real tiger fish lol not very helpful but after some research i think they are coius microlepis

You can get Couis microlepis fairly commonly these days for prices more around the £25-£30 mark, i'd tell them where they can stick them at £200.

im not certain they are coius microlepis they are much darker in colour than the pic in the index.the stripes are more like black and brown rather than black and yellow

There are one or two really rare tiger fish species knocking about in the trade...I'll see if I can find some pics.

Here we go Datnoides campbelli. Rare as ... !

D.campbelli

Probably aren't anything like this but if they are then 200 quid's probably a fair price.

Cheers,
Luke.

well from the pic that was shown in the link it could be any kind of tiger as most of them turn black or washed out and its hard to tell which is which unless you know what you are looking for

if it looks like the one in the link its probably a indo tiger which is the most comen and are normaly washed out like that the one in the link is a cambelli but a stressed one

you need to be very carful when buying tigers (dats) unless you know what you are looking for and even people who do know what they are looking for make buying mistakes

Surely if it was stressed then it would be totally dark and washed out and not have bright cream markings on it. Campbelli are like that normally...that's what makes them so damn sexy. You'd have to be pretty incompetent to mistake one for a stressed microlepis or whatever in my opinion.

they dont look like that normally i had one for 2yrs and it never looked like that when it settled in

their you go hears mine

if you think a stressed out cambelli looks sexy then you have never owned one or you must be the incompetent one

Hey dude fair play. Sorry I was abit lairy. Don't junvenile campbelli look like that and then develop more pronounced bars as they get older - like your fine specimen?

Having said that if these fish have been in the shop for 2 years then they're unlikely to be juveniles and thus I'm probably totally wrong. My bad.

Cheers,
Luke.

no problem i just used to be tiger mad so know my tigers very very well

the cambelli is ment to be slightly brackish water and sometimes takes a whiale to get fully stable in fresh water but once stable they do very well in fresh water

the only type of tiger that needs brakish water long term is the silver tiger datnoid quadfetulartus (spelt wrong)
