I guy i was speaking to today told me my tiger barbs would be fine with cichlids, is this true?

Cichlids covers a huge number of species, did you have any in mind?

IMO they shouldn't be kept with lake malawi cichlids,
or large or aggressive species like Oscars and Red Devils for obvious reasons
and very small peaceful species like Rams or Apistos,

species like, Kribs, Severum, Blue Acaras, Firemouths should be fine
