I've had my tiger barbs for over 9 months now, and sometimes i think that one of them looks pregnant. However i have never seen them spawn and to fate i have had no fry. I've managed to get some pics and wondered if anyone would be able to tell me their sex?

It'd help if i attached the pictures - d'oh! The first pic - i wonder if the barb on the right is a female and the one on the left male?

Male tiger barbs will have bright colourations as well as a red nose like the top picture that you have. Females will be more dull in colour and have a faint to no red stripe on their dorsal fin. Females will also be more plump than males.

If you want to induce spawning then I reccomend you try reading this article all about breeding tiger barbs. http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/breeding/tigerbarbs.php

WOW.... Is that a BIO Life Filter? Thats a blast from the past. That was my first filter all them years ago. I'd forgotten about it!

Yep, it is a biolife! I have it in my tropiquarium 68! I also have a trop 88 that i may set up soon as well.

So....any ideas if the tiger barb on the right in the first pic is a female?

OK so the females still have a red nose, but is its just not as bright as the males then. It also looks like the females have more of a pronounced stomach. I think that i therefore have 2 males and 1 female in my tank.

If the female looks like she is laden with eggs - will she spawn regardless? A month ago she looked like she was about to burst - but then she seemed to lose the bulge. Any ideas?

Might of been that she did lay eggs but you didn't see them and they got eaten?

Plus it might be harder to tell the difference when they're not fully grown.
