hi fishbguy...I would not put less them 6 otherwise they tend to be agressive towards each other, they still will be, but seem to figure out a peeking order that way, I would agree with 6 to 8

What are the dimensions of your tank? Some people think that 16g is too small for tiger barbs as they get a bit big 3+ inches and are very active. So people feel like they should have more room to swim around. However, if your tank is extra long it may be okay. If you do decide to go ahead with them, I would agree with 6 - that way no one fish is getting overly picked on.
You would also have room for a few bottom feeders if you kept up on waterchanges and your filtration was good. Possibly some cories, loaches or a small plec. :good:

I am one of those people that think anything under 29g is too small for tiger barbs. I really don't think you should have any tiger barbs, as the tank is too small to have a proper group of 8+. I don't think you should have any less than 8 because otherwise they pick on other fish too much.

I think 6 would be fine. Just don't plant it too heavily, as they like swimming room. You could add a few cories or loaches to it, too, if you keep up the maintenance.
I will say that having only 1 or 2 color variations together looks better. Like either all of 1 color or at most 3 each of 2 different colors. That's just my ever-so-humble opinion though! :good:
