I would like to get some tiger barbs for my planted 55 gallon, at the moment i have three platys, three guppies and five neon tetras. Would the tiger barbs fin nip the other fish especially the guppies with their long tails and because they are slower swimmers?

Would a group of six to eight tigers reduce this aggression or should i just rethink?

my tiger barbs eat 4 of the neon tetra's i had in my tank and yes they would nip the fins of your guppies.......
tigers by name tigers by nature! they are ferocious fish i tried buying more but this just increased the carnage

Hmmm...looks like il have to get a shoal of different tetras and another type of barb that is not so aggressive then!

If you get a big enough school of Tiger Barbs they will leave the other fish alone. You'll need at least 8 Tiger Barbs, 10 preferred. There will be soo many Tiger Barbs that they will be too busy fighting amongst themselves for the top stop in their school that they won't even both the other fish.

Tiger Barbs are all about school size and if it's big enough school they'll leave everybody else alone. If the school isn't big enough they'll get bored and "play" with their tankmates.

also depends on the fish though I stocked 12 tiger barbes in to a tank which had 20 neons and 4 plattyes 2 days later when I could take them back I had 6 neons and 2 platty's left. imo I wouldnt rcomend them if you have tetras and I think they would have the tails of the guppy's as soon as they get a chance.

have a look at pentazona barbs, just a thought. i liked the look of them and they are meant to be alot less aggressive. someone will be able to tell you alot more about them than me though.

Excellent thank you very much i really like the sound and look of them! Going to go and have a look around some shops tomorrow to see if they have any! :good:

Pentazona barbs are not aggressive but don’t really have the shape of tiger barbs in my opinion. They colour up well :D

Parti-Pentazona Barbs have the body shape and size of a tiger and the group I have don’t seem aggressive to other fish. Less colourful then tigers though :(

Having stocked both and assure you either are a great addition to a tank.

if you go for the pentazona let me know how you get on, cause i fancy getting some also. glad to be of some help. your the first person i've giving advice to, so hopefully it works well for you.

Looks l;ike you have some free space.
With that space the barbs might just keep to themselves, and theres a high chance the others will be fine.

Just bumping this up for cristov! :good: Got four pentazona barbs, will be getting two more on friday when i get paid! They are ace and i would recommend them, the black stripes on mine are jet black and look ace against the green plants. Oh and so far not a sign of fin nipping not even between themselves. :good: :D
